MORE ABOUT STELLENBOSCH

Beautiful oak-lined streets, Cape Dutch architecture, arts and culture, restaurants…and drunk students! Welcome to the historic town of Stellenbosch, or Stellies as its known amongst the locals. Situated just 50km from Cape Town, the second oldest town in South Africa is home to some of the country’s top wine producers and restaurants.

The history of Stellenbosch dates back to 1679 when Simon van Der Stel, the Governor of the Cape Colony at the time, was granted a stretch of land by the Dutch East India Trading Company, and he promptly named the area after himself…as one does! Despite many attempts the early settlers struggled to produce decent wine, and it was only when the French Huguenots arrived in 1688 did the regions fortunes change.

The town finds itself surrounded by spectacular mountain ranges. In the north we have the Simonsberg mountains (also named after Mr van der Stel), the Hottentots-Holland mountain range in the east and the Stellenbosch Mountains in the south. These mountains play a vital role in the climate and terroir, and in amongst all of this beauty we find some of the best wine estates in the world.

Stellenbosch is famous for its Cabernet Sauvignon, which can be found on wine lists across the globe, while Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc are of an equal high standard and quality. Stellenbosch is also the home of Pinotage, a blend of Pinot Noir and Hermitage, made famous by Abraham Perold, the first Professor of Viticulture at Stellenbosch University. Choosing the “best” farms and wines is difficult and subjective, so we suggest you visit them all…all 200 of them! Or have a look at our favourites, but for some reason our list keeps growing.

ERNIE ELS

.

Speciality: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chenin Blanc.

Located at the base of the Helderberg Mountains, this magnificent winery was officially opened in 2005. For those who dont know, Ernie Els is one of South Africas many legendary golfers, and the winner of 4 majors. Join his team for a tour of the cellar and a tasting on the terrace, which offers spectacular views of Table Mountain in the distance, and the valley below! Or sample some of their award winning rosê in the newly opened Wine Library. The restaurant, which serves farm-style cuisine, is open from Wednesday to Sunday for lunch only.

Why we like it: Besides the amazing views and their award wining wine, the estate is also a tribute to the man himself. Visit the trophy room, or practice your swing on the small chipping green.

JORDAN WINES

Located in the Stellenbosch Valley, this charming estate boasts spectacular views of the Stellenbosch and Helderberg Mountains. Join them for a tasting on their outside veranda, or for casual lunch at the Bakery. They also offer a fine dining experience at The Jordan Restaurant, as well as guided cellar tours and private evening sundowners. The terrior plays an important role in their award winning wine. The black tourmaline granite, found in the area, helps the soil to retain heat and in turn produces some fantastic Chardonnays.

Why we like it: Its relaxed atmosphere and spectacular views of the Stellenbosch and Helderberg mountains. You can also sit on the grass by the dam and enjoy a picnic basket, but you need to book in advance.

LOURENSFORD

Speciality: Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Cab Sav, Merlot, and MCC

Located at the base of the Helderberg Mountain, in Somerset West, this popular wine estate has plenty of offer when it comes to entertainment. Paddle tennis, clay pigeon shooting, garden walks, and a MTB trail. Then there is the wellness centre, art gallery, antique store and an art jamming studio for the kids. Once you have finished exploring you have an almost endless list of options when it comes to refreshments. Try a coffee roasting experience, a craft beer, vodka, or wine tasting! There are also 2 restaurants to choose from, plus on the weekends you could opt for one of the many dishes on offer at the  popular Lourensford Market. As for the wine, their whites are superb, with the cool ocean breeze playing a role in the development of the grapes. There are a couple of tasting options, but our favourite was the Turkish Delight pairing.

Why we like it: There is so much to experience and keep you occupied, you can spend hours here, and I think that’s the point. Even if you come for a coffee or a glass of wine, the setting and views are really stunning. When it gets busy you can also find a spot away from the crowds to enjoy the scenery. Definitely one of our favourite venues in Cape Town.

RUST EN VREDE

Nestled below the Helderberg Mountains this beautiful estate has been able to maintain part of the original Cape Dutch farm house and outbuildings, dating back to 1780, and has achieved National Monument status. Why we like it: Their beautiful gardens and vineyards! Rust end Vrede was voted as the #1 vineyard in Cape Town in 2014 by Travel and Leisure.

SPIER

Speciality: Chenin and Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon.

With over 300 years of heritage, this is more then just a wine farm! Private vineyard Segway tours, self-guided walks, the Spier Artisan studio, and a local craft market are on the list of things to do. Picnic basket’s from the Farm Cafe are available, or you can opt for a meal at the Vadas Smokehouse & Bakery, or head over to the Hotel Restaurant which is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. As for the wine, be sure to sample some of their easy drinking Signature or Creative Block range, with the later being a blend of 2,3 or 5 different varietals.

Why we like it: Its festive atmosphere and wide open spaces. Spier is a great place to visit for families looking for space and something to eat. For us the tastings deck is what we liked the most.

TOKARA

Situated on the top of the Helshoogte pass, this gorgeous estate is well known for its spectacular views, beautiful wine, and olive oil. Join them in their tasting lounge, sample their wine, and gaze out over the Simonsberg Mountains and valley below. Opt for a fine dining experience at the Tokara Restaurant, or relax at the kiddie friendly Deli-catesen. Tokara is also the only farm that gives you access to hike up the Simonsberg Mountain. There are some strict requirements to meet, but its for your own safety.

Why we like it: The views and atmosphere are fantastic, plus the Deli-Catessen offers a budget and kid friendly experience. We also like the fact that they give you access to the Simonsberg Mountains.
